The Gel Nimbus 15 continues the legacy already established by its predecessor, the Nimbus 14 and the modus operandi is essentially the same. Whilst not the lightest shoe available for the $100 mark, what you get instead is a shoe that has excellent support and comfort thanks to its robust and well cushioned design and it is also a design that is proven, as the integral structure is essentially exactly the same as its predecessor. Reliability is the aim of the game with the Nimbus 15 and it delivers on this front well.
Out of the box or on the shelf, you would be forgiven if you mistook the integral design of the Nimbus 15 for the 14 generation. The shape is essentially the same and even the patterns present upon the upper of the shoe are incredibly similar. The same style of materials are also employed throughout, but if you had no issue with the Nimbus 14 then this is not an issue whatsoever as you already have a shoe virtually custom made for you. The color scheme, if you choose, can be a little flashier than before, but other than this there are no real discernible differences.
COMFORTABLE SOLE DESIGN
Upon initial inspection, the sole design also appears to be exactly the same, but there are subtle differences to be seen especially in relation to the gel pads present in the midfoot region. The 14 had noticeably less gel than its predecessor, which meant flexibility increased especially in the forefront of the foot’s strike but it was not the most comfortable of shoes upon the forefront region. The Nimbus 15 injects a lot more gel back into the sole, which results in a much more cushioned, yet somewhat weightier shoe.
FLEXIBILITY AND CUSHIONING
The forefoot support is excellent and the shoe will appeal to runners who utilize a lot of the front part of their foot. The outsole of the shoe has deep grooves present that account greatly towards the flexibility of the shoe also, making the front part of the shoe incredibly pleasing to run on. There is the inherent issue of there also being a lack of design that is capable of sufficiently slowing down your strike when you are in full flow, which some more heel orientated users may find incredibly uncomfortable. Thus, this shoe comes best recommended to those who utilize the forefront of their foot regularly in their strike pattern.
As previously mentioned, once you begin to really wear in a pair of Nimbus 15’s you start to appreciate just how familiar they feel and this is due in part to the upper design that sees very little change from the previous model. The good news is that the toe box of the shoe is roomy, yet sufficiently supported and thus movement through the toes is not an issue.
The finish on the Nimbus 15 is visually somewhat pleasing if a little understated but this does not present a real issue. The material utilized on the toe box and side walls, whilst incredibly comfortable on the feet is not the most breathable material available on the market and thus may cause some issues, especially during intense summer training.
As you may have guessed, the Nimbus 15 is not the lightest shoe available but this does have its benefits. For heavy duty training sessions and endurance training, it is a good option to test resilience against support and thus comes recommended. For true speed, however, better options are available as the shoes weigh in at some 13.6 ounces, which is around 380 grams. They are a little tiring upon the feet over short distances.
- They are based off of a tried and trusted formula
- Excellent forefront support and roomy toe box
- More gel is injected into the sole for a more cushioned and comfortable strike
- Not a real progression from its predecessor, there are no real new features present
- Design is not that visually attractive
- Flexible at odd points in the shoe, making it uncomfortable for some
- Not especially light
If you like things in life that are tried and tested, then it is more than likely that the Asics Nimbus 15 will appeal to you. It is a true warrior of running and its robust design is good at resisting degradation whilst being extremely comfortable. You cannot help but feel that the shoe is a little aged in design, however, and it you are looking for something a little different then you will be best served looking elsewhere. I hope this Asics Gel Nimbus 15 review has been helpful.
