Asics have developed a reputation as an excellent shoe company if you struggle with slight overpronation or a lack of padding from most normal running shoes. They have always managed to combine excellent heel and sole control with materials inside the shoe itself that have always been comfortable and supportive to your feet, and the good news is that the Asics GT-2000 is no different. Combining many other key features of the Asics range into a compact and visually pleasing unit, this is an excellent, well padded standard running shoe.
Asics have always had a good look about them, whether they are sitting on the shelf or in motion and the Asics GT-2000 is no different. The whole of the range utilizes bold color schemes to the best of their abilities and the whole mix of materials looks natural and well progressed to the eye, giving the shoe a cohesive and comprehensive feel. The shoe itself also had good weighting, with a solid but not overbearing sole and a well designed toe box and forefront that sits well in terms of placement.
The upper sole also has numerous well designed factors attached to it. The webbing present on the outside of the shoe is mainly for decorative purpose but it is layered with the inner cloth, which still means breathability is good whilst generally providing enough support in the toe box to be satisfactory for most runners. Perhaps a little more in terms of this aspect would be more desirable for some, but it also contributes to the overall flexibility so it cannot be bemoaned too much.
The foot cradle is also well designed and provides good support for your foot in a variety of settings. The toe box is perhaps a little narrow, like most of the Asics range but this does mean that for some the support will be even better, especially in the midsole of the foot.
The material utilised throughout the whole of the Asics GT-2000 insole is also highly satisfactory, being not only incredibly comfortable but also cushioning throughout motion. The base material also forms itself well to the foot and the break in period is not excessively long, which adds to the usability considerably.
There are three distinct parts to the Asics GT-2000 and these will be summarised below. There are gel pads towards the back of the shoe towards the heel that works well in conjunction with the rubber cushioning installed throughout the rest of the heel. The midsole of the shoe is full of patented Asics technology, using the Fluidride system to great effect which helps contribute to the overall smoothness and ride pattern considerably.
There is also a guidance line installed that aims to move energy created by the heel strike towards the forefront of the shoe, with the end result aimed at greater acceleration and traction throughout the forefront. By and large, it works incredibly well and did not distract from my usual run motion.
Even with so many materials utilized throughout the heel, the Asics GT-2000 feels consistent and well designed, with excellent cushioning available throughout the whole of the shoe, especially at the rear. This means that the ride is well supported, especially through the strike to ensure that you are not overly heavy on your feet. The insole can also be attributed to this, providing excellent support.
Thanks to the workings of the upper sole and the overall sole design, there is excellent flexibility. The medial arch is supportive whilst allowing for good flexibility throughout the shoe, giving you excellent control over your stride.
- An incredibly lightweight shoe
- Excellent flexibility rates, allowing for good control and a comfortable strike
- Well designed sole and overall support
- Good breathability
- Not the most durable of designs, promoting heavy wear throughout the heel area when utilised regularly
- Not a huge advancement from the previous incarnation
The Asics GT-2000 continues Asics modus operandi of slow refinement equals progress, throwing out a satisfying and incredibly comfortable shoe that will suit most advanced runners, for both speed and maintenance training. It is not especially durable however, so you will want to keep it in rotation with your other footwear. I hope that this Asics GT-2000 review has been helpful.
