Your running shoes really do need to go the distance. The New Balance MT1210 takes this saying quite literally and provides you with a running shoe that is designed for the longest of all running events, the marathon. With several design features aimed at ensuring your feet keep pounding away on the road, no matter how tough the going may get. The New Balance MT1210 is a highly satisfactory shoe that also works quite well at shorter distances too. Practicality is key with this design.
The initial look of the New Balance MT1210 is a shoe that will go the distance thanks to its incredibly robust looking design. The heel is a little higher than most conventional shoes, being around 6mm in height but this does mean that the shoe gains a sharp, angular look that makes it look somewhat sleek despite the rock solid design look. The color scheme also utilizes more dark colors than lighter ones, so whilst it can look a little odd in terms of colors, the performance of the shoe is not affected.
The upper of the New Balance MT1210 also utilizes several clever technologies and materials to ensure this shoe is as suitable for marathons and long distance as it can possibly be. For one, there is a robust toe bumper installed that protects you from stubs and general toe issues. Webbing is welded onto the sides of the shoe to allow for additional support to occur on the sides of the shoe, and the volume that one can fit inside the upper of this shoe is impressive as well. The tongue is located high up on the shoe, ensuring that there is plenty of space for your feet to swell on long distance runs and whilst the shoe can feel a little floppy on the foot when going down or uphill, in the long distance the shoe performs much better.
The insole of the shoe is also well designed. Once again it does feel a little roomy by and large, but the material once it breaks down to your foot shape hugs your feet well and the heel counter at the rear of the shoe also keeps your foot well in check, even when you are ascending and descending the steepest hills.
SOLE DESIGN AND RUNNABILITY
The distance factor is implemented into the New Balance MT1210 extensively and the shoe by and large really performs when you begin to clock up the miles. Nitrogen infused foam is utilized in the heel region of the shoe which provides excellent support and Revilite foam is directly under your foot bed, providing excellent padding and support.
N2 material is utilized in the forefoot to ensure that your toe-off and acceleration pattern remains constant throughout the use of the shoe and the Vibram outsole of the shoe also performs incredibly well, providing excellent traction upon the outsole whilst also shedding mud and debris relatively well. There is also a pre-installed rock bed in the heel of the shoe, which allows you to run over sharper materials than found on normal roads and paths without worrying about puncturing your foot or the shoe.
The cushioning of the New Balance MT1210 is excellent, although if there is a criticism to be made it is that you do not start to realize just how good it is until you really start to clock up the miles. The support throughout the heel is fantastic and the midsole is sufficiently cushioned to disallow for over extension and general overuse of the foot area.
Thanks to the robust design flexibility is not the best you will see but New Balance has taken several steps to increase this factor considerably. There are deep grooves set in the midsole and forefoot of the shoe, so whilst there are numerous materials found throughout the shoe, by and large they do not impact the flexibility thanks to these grooves. Control initially seems a little off, but once you have covered distance it improves.
- An incredibly durable long distance shoe with excellent materials throughout
- Surprisingly flexible at all distances covered, especially at longer ones
- Good, robust look whilst not feeling clunky
- Excellent traction thanks to the heel and outsole design
- Not the best shoe over shorter distances, making it uncomfortable for the first few miles potentially.
The New Balance Mt1210 really is a trailblazer and is one of the best distance shoes currently available on the market. It combines excellent traction with good medial support and the toe off is impressive despite the thickness of the sole of the shoe. It can be a little strange on the feet over short distances, however. I hope that this New Balance MT1210 review has been helpful.
