The Salomon XR Mission is the latest trail shoe from the Salamon catalog, a shoe that functions as both a normal running shoe and a trainer more than capable of surviving whatever off-road environment you choose to throw at it. Replacing the Salomon Crossmax, this is a shoe that will suit virtually all of your running needs, combining tried and tested technology with a good fit, appearance, and performance to deliver you results as a runner time after time.
Surprisingly, for saying it is an off-road orientated shoe the Salamon XR Mission is not overly bulky, and utilizes lightweight materials in appearance and integral structure throughout, leading to a run with good traction as a result. The overall weighting of the shoe is excellent too, with a weighty but not uncomfortable look to the heel area, the midfoot region, as well as the toe box that appears nice and roomy before you slip them on. The color scheme comes in an array of bright oranges, yellows, greens and silvers and all suit the shoe well.
The upper of the Salomon XR Mission is fantastic thanks to the materials and structure utilized. The majority of the upper is constructed from lightweight mesh that adds to the breathability greatly. Made from Ripstop Nylon, it is incredibly durable on the whole and there is also a gusseted mesh trampoline right below the tongue of the shoe for additional support in this area.
There is a distinct addition of safety features for your foot too, primarily focused around the toe cap of the shoe which is durable and will reduce the risk of stubbing your toe considerably. There are two quick lace systems also installed that vastly reduce the risk of the shoe slipping off of your foot.
The insole of the Salomon XR Mission is also fantastic and moulded to the foot shape well, allowing for good placement within the shoe that is vital for stability and overall traction. The heel resting area is protected by a steel cup and this kept the heel well in place throughout testing, especially when combined with the foam utilized towards the rear of the heel for added comfort and grip of your feet.
SOLE DESIGN AND FEATURES
The sole of the Salomon XR Mission is where the wear and tear rate and general cushioning is at its greatest. The midsole of the shoe is one piece of molded EVA that is both lightweight and extremely rugged, ideal for trail runs and general off-roading. On the normal road surface, the shoe did feel a little stiff but the overall support in the medial arch and rear of the shoe aided matters considerably.
The outsole is another area of note. Durable carbon rubber is situated on the outsole of the shoe which aid wear and tear greatly as well as being useful for impact resistance. The traction was also excellent as a result. There was also more than sufficient spacing for the lugs to shed mud and general debris they had picked up, which was nice to note as this improved traction and helped to reduce weight.
The 10mm sole does an excellent job of providing a smooth, stable and supportive ride of trails and the cushioning abilities were fantastic. The midsole provided ample resistance and also helped in the heel to toe transition at the same time which was of great benefit. The heel also felt fantastic.
Due to the nature of the surfaces you would be traversing with the Salomon XR 12 the flexibility was not the best, but to counter this did mean that general support and the overall ride felt smooth when the going got tough. There is still good transition throughout the foot, and the upper sole design accounts for good flexibility also.
- This is a robust and stable running shoe that will traverse just about anything you throw at it
- Excellent support throughout
- Surprisingly well cushioned and soft on the feet
- Great use of materials and spacing
- On roads the ride is a little lumpy and ‘slap happy’ upon the feet
If you are looking for a running shoe that will take you from the deepest ravines to the highest of hills, you will be well set in the Salomon XR Mission. It is a robust, comfortable and supportive shoe that will tackle just about anything you throw at it. I hope that this Salomon XR Mission review has been helpful.
